In chapter 2 Paul speaks out about the guilt of the Jewsthat the Jews were practicing the same things the Gentiles were doing.† Paul also explains Godís principles ofjudgment. Not only do they apply toGentiles but to Jews also.Hecontinually points out that Godís hand is out to the Jews first.† Paul asks the Jews since they have the Lawwhy donít they obey it.The life theJews were living gave reason for the Gentiles to blaspheme God.† Is your lifestyle so bad that it givespeople the reason to reject God?Chapter 2 is summed up by looking at Romans 3:8b&9; Let us doevil, that good may come? Whose damnation is just. 9What then? Arewe better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews andGentiles, that they are all under sin;.

V1: Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thoucondemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things.† Paul explains that the Jews have no excusefor committing the sins of the Gentiles. Then condemning them when they are doing the same things.

V2:But we aresure that the judgment of God is according to truth against them which commitsuch things. If they sin theywill be judged according to the truth of God not by what they think isright. There is no escape.† We have to be responsible for what we do.

V3:Andthinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them which do such things, and doestthe same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God?† Paul was again telling the Jews that theycould not direct others to live and do right when they were doing evilthemselves. We have to evaluate how welive what kind of things do we do that send the wrong signal to the people wetry to influence.Man is a dependentcreature, made by God, subject under Him, and accountable to Him.† You can justify to yourself and man what youare doing, but you cannot escape the judgment of God.

V4:Ordespisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering;not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?† God offers the Jews many things under Graceand they still did not know that the goodness of God provided repentance.† People do not realize that there is victoryin their lives through Christ.God leadsus to Him but most often we resist the call.Hosea 11:4 I drew them with cords of a man, with bands of love:and I was to them as they that take off the yoke on their jaws, and I laid meatunto them. andJeremiah 31:3 The LORD hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I haveloved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawnthee.

V5:But afterthy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against theday of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God; Even whenthey knew what was right they did what they wanted to do in spite of the knownconsequences. They are saving up thewrong types of treasures that they will be held accountable for at thejudgment.

This revelation is the relieving of the truth Ė it is allgoing to come out.The reason wecontinue to sin is we do not understand the goodness of God.† Most sin is willful disobedience toward God.

V6:Whowill render to every man according to his deeds:† Who is going to give/reveille the details oftheir lives based on what they have done. What are they going to have to say about you?God will!

V7:To themwho by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life: There were somethat were doing right and would have glory, honor, immortality, and eternallife. There are always a few that getthe message.

V8,9: But unto them that are contentious, and do notobey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath. 9Tribulationand anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and alsoof the Gentile; Paul has away about speaking the truth.† John 5:29 layís it out quite clear:And shall comeforth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they thathave done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation. All will bejudged.

We will not be judged on our profession of faith, which is unto salvation. Our faith iswhat produces the type of works we do and by this we will be judged.† Another words by the life we live.† Rev 22:12; And,behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man accordingas his work shall be.†† And 2 Cor5:10; For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; thatevery one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hathdone, whether it be good or bad. The judgment of believers is anotherlesson.By being justified by faith wewant to live up to Godís standard.Wewant Godís approval on our life.Wewant what God has for us the end being eternal life.We want to finish the course as in 2 Timothy 4:7-8; I havefought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: 8Henceforththere is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteousjudge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them alsothat love his appearing.Mostpeople that do evil are selfish and do what they want regardless ofothers.

Paul again and throughout Romans calls out the Jewfirst. He holds them responsiblebecause they had the Law, Ordnances and Prophets.Even before Christ the Jews had no excuse to do wrong and hereminds them of it.

We also have no excuse we not only have the OldTestament to learn from but we also have the New Testament as an example tofollow. But if you do not read it Ė nowonder you have problems.

V10:Butglory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, andalso to the Gentile: There was hope for those that did well.† These works are not unto salvation, (that isthrough faith, God given) but to the rewards in Heaven.

V11:For there is no respect of persons with God.† God wants all of us to do right.† God wants the same for all of us.

V12-15:Foras many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as manyas have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law; 13(For not thehearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall bejustified. 14For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do bynature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a lawunto themselves: 15Which show the work of the law written in theirhearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the meanwhile accusing or else excusing one another;)Just because you know right from wrong does not mean God is goingto save you. That is your responsibilityto accept Christ. There is no secondchance in this world.Ignorance is notbless. You reject Godís Word and itseternal damnation.Physical death isfinal for all in the flesh.Do notreason your way out of Heaven. This iswhy we need to act as missionaries for who we come in contact with.† Do you think that Heaven is only foryou? The Law was given to Moses, John1:17; For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by JesusChrist, the first which is the beginning of the Dispensation of Law, and the second thebeginning of the Dispensation of Grace. The Law was for Israel. The Jewsknew the Law it was taught in the Synagogue.

††††† Yourconscience is important in making dissensions, but not absolutelytrustworthy. You need the Holy Spiritto have the final say.We can have goodintensions and still be guilty. We musttrust in the Blood of Christ to cleanse our consciences.† Hebrews 9:14; How much more shall theblood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot toGod, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

V16:Inthe day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to mygospel. When the judgmentcomes, it is all coming out no more secrets. You will answer for your life and only your life, Rev 20:12: And Isaw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: andanother book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judgedout of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. ††Rev 2:17: Hethat hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To himthat overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him awhite stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth savinghe that receiveth it.Romans 14:12: Refers that allChristians will stand before Christ.ď So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.Ē††† John 5:22: For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed alljudgment unto the Son:ForChristians Christ will be our judge, are you ready? We need to separate ourselves from the sins of the world.

V17:Behold, thou art called a Jew, andrestest in the law, and makest thy boast of God,

Jews felt they were better off than the Gentiles becausethey had the Law.They felt they knewGod better then the Gentiles. It is easy to get off the track.† Satan continually puts spurs on the track toget you off course.

V18-20:And knowest his will, and approvestthe things that are more excellent, being instructed out of the law; 19Andart confident that thou thyself art a guide of the blind, a light of them whichare in darkness, 20An instructor of the foolish, a teacher of babes, which hast the form of knowledge and of the truth in the law.The Jews knew the will of God forthem. They knew what they were supposedto-do.They should be a light showingothers the truth and leading them.Theyhad a responsibility to teach and be an example for others.† In v20 there are a few words that need to beexplained so we can get the full meaning of what it says.Instructor/teacher: discipliner. Trainingexpected to produce a specific character or pattern of behavior; especiallytraining that produces moral or mental improvement.††Foolish: means mindless, stupid, ignorant, egotistic, rash, unbelieving, and unwise.Babes: Not speaking, that is an infant, simple minded, animmature Christian, childish.

V21-23:Thoutherefore which teachest another, teachest thou not thyself? thou thatpreachest a man should not steal, dost thou steal? 22Thou thatsayest a man should not commit adultery, dost thou commit adultery? thou thatabhorrest idols, dost thou commit sacrilege? 23Thou that makest thyboast of the law, through breaking the law dishonourest thou God?†† Paul said that they were busy doing theteaching but were not good examples. They were doing the things they were telling everyone else not to do. Inv22 the word abhorrest means: Detest, to be disgusted.Sacrilege means:† Temple despoiler, robber of churches, desecration, theft of something sacred.

V24:Forthe name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles through you, as it is written.† The Jews were bringing discredit to God bythere testimony. They talked a goodwalk but did not walk the talk. This isthe same today.Through thepermissiveness of the Christians today people say, ďIf that is Christianity Iwant no part of itĒ

V25-27:Forcircumcision verily profiteth, if thou keep the law: but if thou be a breakerof the law, thy circumcision is made uncircumcision. 26Therefore ifthe uncircumcision keep the righteousness of the law, shall not hisuncircumcision be counted for circumcision? 27And shall notuncircumcision which is by nature, if it fulfil the law, judge thee, who by theletter and circumcision dost transgress the law?Just because you have physical evidance of being a Jew itdoes not mean much based on their action. The same applies to us: just because we look like Christians do ouractions measure up.What does your signstate Ė does it point to Christ.Paulwas telling the Jews that the Gentiles acted more righteous than them and thatshould mean something.

It is not as important on how you look as it is as how youact.

V28, 29:Forhe is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which isoutward in the flesh: 29But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; andcircumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whosepraise is not of men, but of God.Paulis saying that to live a holy life separated unto God you have to have a changein heart and in the spirit. This is notthe flesh; there is no power in the flesh. You have to live in the spirit wanting to be in Godís perfect will.
